All
Hallows’ Eve, which has been shortened over the centuries to Hallowe’ne
(Halloween), was a liturgical vigil in itself up to 1956. It is the
vigil for the feast of All Saints Day, November 1st and All Souls Day,
November 2nd. The vigil was kept on one night (10/31) because a vigil
is never held on a feast day. Two of the most cherished Catholic
devotions are to pray for the intercession of the Saints and to pray for
the souls of the dead… who in return will pray for us.
These
three days, the vigil and the two feasts, help us to meditate on death
and eternal life, as well as to honor all the saints in Heaven and the
souls in Purgatory. The general theme that runs through all of them is
LIFE IS FOREVER: Our bodies will die, but our souls will live
FOREVER!!!!
The
vigil and the feasts unite us, the Church on Earth with the Church in
Heaven and the souls in Purgatory. This is accomplished in a mysterious
and mystical way which can fill us with a richness and an abundance of
joy that no earthly adventure or devilish temptation could even attempt
to match!
This is the historical tradition that motivated us (Cadet troop 1761) to
share the TRUE meaning of Halloween with our sister Girl Scouts from our
parish… Please share the fun and inspiration as we walk you through our
All Hallows Eve Ball.
